Every now and then you see something inspiring and want to share it. Dave Eggers presentation at the Ted Conference is one of these things. Watch it — it will be 24 minutes of your life well spent. What is the presentation about and how does it relate to the law? Here’s the story.
Dave Eggers wanted to bring writers and editors together with students in inpoverished communities in a tutoring center. He wanted to use the building where he published his magazine, but there was one problem – the property was zoned for retail. What to do? Create a storefront selling supplies to the working buccaneer. The building looked like a hull of a ship so why not. They sell planks by the foot, supplies to combat scurvey, peg legs – all hand made and fitted to you, eye patchesy — black for everyday use and pastel colors for stepping out at night; and a fish theatre consisting of a saltwater tank with three seats in front of it. In the back of the store is the tutoring center.
This isn’t the only example. There’s the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. and the Echo Park, California Time Travel Mart — whenever you are, we’re already there. I love this. When common sense doesn’t rule the day, find a way to make it win. The law can be so silly some times.
