Barefoot Running and the Newton Running Shoe

June 30, 2009

Could they have had it wrong for all these years (they meaning the running shoe companies).  They make running shoes meant to protect the striking of the heal.  This design in turn promotes running on the heal.  But take your shoes off and run in the grass.  Then pay attention to how you run.  You’ll run on the mid-sole or front of your foot.  This type of running affects how the rest of your body is aligned.  This is what Popular Mechanics found as explained in an article entitled Barefoot Running and Shoe Companies.  In fact a recent study at the University of Newcastle in Australia concluded there is no scientific evidence to support claims that running shoes with elevated heel crash pads and elaborate anti-pronation systems prevent injuries in runners.

I enjoy running, but have been stricken with shin splints for about a year and half.  I’ve been going to physical therapy to fix this.  So the Popular Mechanics article got me thinking about whether I’m running correctly.  It also lead me to a new running shoe called the Newton Running Shoe.  I bought myself a pair today and I’ll let you know what I think.  Here’s a bit more on the shoe.

Ive just checked out the Newton website and i’m really interested in them! I’ll keep an eye out for your review!

Why don’t you also try out some barefoot shoes? as you mentioned normal running shoes make you strike your heels first as you run which is not how we’re meant to run! Wen barefoot you strike the forefoot first… i’ve been wearing Vibram FiveFingers for a few months now and they make you feel like you’re barefoot but they protect your feet! The pain i used to experience in my heels and hips has now gone!
